Olympics: Only One Week to Go!

Heather Wheeler MP and Cllr Bob Wheeler with Official Torch bearer Karen Cresswell in Hatton

The Olympics are fast approaching with only a week to go until the opening ceremony! Although all eyes will be looking at London between the 27 July - 12 August and then again during the Paralympics between the 29 August and the 9 September, I thought I would take this opportunity to talk about all the fantastic events which have happened in Derbyshire as a result of the Olympics.

On the 30th of June, I attended an excellent day of sports spearheaded by the South Derbyshire Village Games in Hatton. The day’s events brought together young members from Hatton, Etwall, Barrow, Ticknall and Willington on the Hatton Playing Field in an “Alternative Youth Olympics.” The event was held to raise funds for the participating Youth Groups and also for the John Widdowson Burton to Paris cycle ride, which is raising money for Lymphoma and Leukaemia research.

It was excellent to see so many young people competing for medals. There really was an excellent atmosphere. This event also coincided with the passing of the Olympic torch through Derbyshire. I was lucky enough to meet one of the torch bearers, Karen Cresswell, and to have a close up look at the Olympic Torch with my husband Bob.

Wenlock the official Olympic mascot also visited us back in November when he came to the Green Bank Leisure Centre, in Swadlincote. It was a great day for all the youngsters who came out to see him.

The Olympics have also been good for the area in terms of lottery funding. The Staunton Harold Sailing Club securing £50,000 of Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund will go towards refurbishing the facilities at the club.

I hope that everyone enjoys the celebrations over the next couple of weeks and good luck to all the athletes involved!
