Support for the Swansea Valley Miners Appeal Fund

Last week, Wales was devastated by the tragic mining incident at the Gleision Colliery in the Swansea Valley. Here in South Derbsyhire we have a proud tradition of mining and I am sure many of us were shocked that such a tragedy could happen in this day and age. The events were deeply saddening, and I was personally moved by the response of the Swansea Valley community. I especially want to sing the praises of the emergency services and the specialist rescue teams from across the UK who carried out their work in incredibly difficult and dangerous circumstances with tireless dedication.

The Government is now doing everything it can to facilitate a full investigation of these dreadful events, and to support the survivors. The South Wales Police have already appointed a Senior Investigating Officer, who will draw on technical expertise from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) who are overseen by the Department for Work and Pensions. The Wales Office is also currently co-ordinating across the many UK Government Departments and Agencies that have a role in investigating and responding to the events of last week. Once the investigation is concluded, a full report into the causes of the accident will be published to ensure that we learn the lessons from this tragic incident.

For those that would like to personally help, you may be aware that the South Wales branch of the National Union of Mineworkers have set up the Swansea Valley Miners Appeal Fund, with His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales as the Royal Patron. The Government has also announced that it will be pay the Gift Aid equivalent of 25% on top of all donations received by the fund. This will make a significant difference to the appeal. If you would like to make a donation please visit the following website http://www.minersappealfund.org/.

I really hope this tragic incident is never again repeated. No family or community should have to suffer such a terrible loss.
