The weekend of 9th to the 11th of September I was fortunate to attend several excellent constituency events.
On Friday I attended the 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron 70th Anniversary Dinner. 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron is a fantastic youth organisation in South Derbyshire, which actively participates in all of the activities that the Air Cadet Organisation has to offer, including flying at the Royal Air Force College in Cranwell. The 1211 Squadron also participates in other extra curricular activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. It was great to meet the adult volunteers who oversee the Cadets and the Cadets themselves. They are a great asset to South Derbyshire.
On Saturday, I started the day by attending the Jobcentreplus Jobsfair. This event was designed especially with Bombardier Transport employees in mind. Although I am doing all that I can to aid Bombardier in securing future contracts to ensure that viable train production continues in Derbyshire, there still remains the possibility that Bombardier could make up to 1,400 redundancies. With this in mind, this Jobsfair provided the opportunity for Bombardier employees to meet with both local and national companies to discuss possible employment opportunities. Over twenty companies attended the fair, including JCB, Ultra Electronics, British Gypsum and Cameron. From the feedback I gained and from what I could see personally, the fair was a really positive event and one which I hope gives comfort to those that may in future have to find a new place of employment. Other fairs will be held in the future, so more updates on this to come.
In the afternoon I was fortunate enough to be asked to open the event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Weston on Trent under 5’s preschool playgroup. It was really lovely to meet the parents and staff who dedicate so much of their time to the playgroup. I have no doubt that by 2051, Weston on Trent will be celebrating the playgroups 80th anniversary.
Following this I attended the collation and licensing of the Reverend Dr. Mark Powell by the Bishop of Derby, the Right Reverend Dr. Alastair Redfern and the Archdeacon of Derby the Venerable Dr. Christopher Cunliffe. This was a beautiful service in which Revd. Dr. Mark Powell was made the ‘priest-in-charge’ of the United Benefice of Melbourne, Ticknall, Smisby and Stanton-by-Bridge. I wish Revd. Dr. Mark Powell all the best in his new role.
To end the day, I attended South Derbyshire’s own Last Night of the Proms, based on the popular Proms festival. This really was a cultural feast. I heard classical music performed by local musicians from Newhall Band and best of all money raised by the concert will be donated to the Derbyshire, Leicester and Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA), which after having met with the DLRAA over the summer I know will go to an extremely good use.
On Sunday I met with Linkage Community Trust. Linkage is a brilliant organisation who have been developing a strategy to improve services for people with a learning disability in Derbyshire, based on their successful work with Waterloo Housing in Lincolnshire. At our meeting we discussed funding for learning difficulties in education and how this can be improved. I think Linkage has already done a fantastic job in improving the lives of people with learning disabilities and I hope we can work together to continue to make a difference.
As always I will continue to keep you updated on my website as to issues and events which affect us here in South Derbyshire.
Welcome to my Parliamentary Website, particularly for those of you visiting for the first time, I hope you drop in regularly in the future. I hope this website allows you to see how I am representing your interests locally and nationally, working to improve South Derbyshire. This would not have been possible without your support and I thank the people of SD for electing me.
